A Letter

On nature, and the time it takes.

I began with a question nature had already answered: how to keep a body warm without weight, dry without armour, alive without ornament. I was a researcher then. I had instruments, and the conviction that the body – left to itself for a few hundred thousand years – had worked most of this out already. My work was not to invent. It was to listen.

What started in performance clothing became, over years, a wider house. It surprised me at first that the same question – what does the body actually need? – leads also to food, to what one rests against at home, to what touches the skin in the morning. But it does. The body does not draw lines between its hours; it is the same body in the workshop, at the table, in bed. So one posture, carried far enough, becomes a way of life.

I do not believe in the words purity or quality when they are spoken too loudly. They are conditions, not arguments. A wool that holds its loft for twenty winters is pure in the only sense the word can be kept honest – it is itself, undiluted, made by a person who knew the sheep. Quality, in the same way, is the absence of haste. It cannot be added; it is what remains when nothing has been taken from the work in exchange for speed.

A house, then, is mostly patience. It is the patience to use the slower fibre, to wait for the right harvest, to let a glass cool in the right air. It is also the patience to refuse – to leave a product unmade rather than make it without dignity. Here, the mountains do this work on us. They refuse to be hurried, and after long enough one keeps their time.

To anyone who has read this far: thank you. We make these things in the hope that they will be a small part of a life that is yours, not ours. What we make belongs to us; the use belongs to you. If, in some quiet moment, an Apani garment, or a glass of wine, or a room you have furnished with our help, returns you to what was here before us – that is the only achievement we are after.
